Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, raised in Long Beach California. DuVernay was motivated to pursue her love of art by her aunt Denise when she was a child. Aunt Denise was a nurse who was a night shift worker so that she could commit the day to literature, art as well as theater, among other things. She introduced DuVernay the 1961 film West Side Story and DuVernay was captivated by it. DuVernay learned by example that art could be an avenue for action. Similarly DuVernay's mother was well-educated and encouraged her to say something through the arts. While DuVernay grew up in Compton with her family, she always spent summers in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family lived for generations. Her father recalled watching the Civil Rights movement's historic march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay would make use of the summers she was in Selma to help inspire her future film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was awarded her graduation certificate in Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. DuVernay was a student at University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and was awarded certificates in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay began producing content in broadcast journalism when she was still at college. She started working as an intern at CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to check the trash at the home by a member jury. Her work left her dissatisfied in journalism, so she decided to go into the public relations business. DuVernay was hired right after college, as the junior publicist for a small studio. Her first venture was The DuVernay Agency, her PR firm, in 1999. Aside from PR, her agency launched a number of lifestyle and promotional networks including the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
